... people are SICK...

does it ever end? i know i keep posting stuff like this, but i just can't get past it. story after story. and this story is minor (if that can even be said) compared to the other stuff i see each day. what the heck is wrong with people?
another question to ponder: what is our responsibility? i really would love to hear your thoughts on this!

Unfortunately abusers like this have frequently been abused themselves (I'm not saying it lets them off the hook).

Sometimes that makes them genuinely think these are appropriate ways to discipline. Sometimes it's out of frustration; I've heard parenting can be hard (again, doesn't make it okay).

Sometimes they have genuine mental illnesses, which have roots in their own abuse.

I find out about much worse than this in my line of work. And it's so, so cyclical. So I think our responsibility is to break the cycle somehow. Help young, inexperienced parents who work long hours at minimum wage jobs. Teach them appropriate love and discipline.

And when stuff like this does happen...I don't know. Punish appropriately. But bear in mind that they probably learned it from their parents. The sins of the father will fall on the third and fourth generation...

i guess i just struggle with what our responsibility is as believers who purpose to bring the kingdom in all we do. are we to do more than read articles about abuse? even more than pray? do we foster kids taken from these homes? or get involved in the political process? i REALLY wrestle with this question...

I would say if you're feeling burdened by things like this that maybe you should pray into it to see if there's more the Lord is calling you to. To quote a dear friend, "the need is not the call" but if you're being burdened, maybe there's a reason for it. i don't know... just something to think about. love you, friend.
